The Classic Velvet Charro Jacketsby |
![]() |
A Brief History
Velvet charro jackets originated with Mexican horsemen in the early 1750's. These horsemen developed a style of dress that adapted well to the needs of their profession, as well as their flair for showmanship.
The velvet jackets were hemmed at the bottom of the rib cage to show off the large and extravagant silver concho belts worn over hand-woven sashes by the vaqueros, or horsemen of that era. The sleeves stopped several inches above the wrist to display the ruffled cuffs of their flashy shirts and silver concho wrist cuffs. The short jackets were tight fitting and sometimes sleeveless.
The charro jacket evolved into a distinctive and streamlined design by the early 1900's, done in costly fabrics and discreetly adorned with gold and silver conchos. It was worn extensively by rich "Hacendados" and "Vaqueros" (cowboys) in everyday activities as well as formal occasions.
